The Belt and Road Green Innovation Conference 2026 was held in Hong Kong on Monday.

Themed “Partnering with the Global South on Green Transition, Advancing Sustainable Development Worldwide,” the conference recorded nearly 300 participants from over 20 countries in attendance.

At the conference, Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment, said that by the end of 2025, Chinese enterprises had committed to investing at least 227 billion U.S. dollars in overseas green manufacturing projects, actively implementing the Green Silk Road Envoys Program and the Belt and Road South-South Cooperation Initiative on Climate Change, and signing more than 80 cooperation documents with over 50 countries.

U Hsan Oo, Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation of Myanmar, said that Global South countries face increasingly complex challenges, and platforms such as this conference provide valuable opportunities for exchange among policymakers, investors, technology providers, and experts — helping accumulate practical experience, promote investment, and strengthen technological cooperation.

Aziz Abdukhakimov, adviser to the president of Uzbekistan on environmental issues and chairman of the country’s National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, said that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is not only a platform for trade cooperation and a network of transport corridors, but also a strategic platform for exchanging green technologies, innovation, and investment. Uzbekistan hopes to apply China’s advanced experience and technologies in combating desertification, building shelterbelts, and advancing industrial modernization in an environmentally responsible manner.

Selwin Hart, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Climate Action and Just Transition, noted in a video address that efforts should now leverage the BRI to connect clean-energy technologies, infrastructure, and financial resources, unlock the development potential of the Global South, and called on all parties to work together to move projects from planning through financing to on-the-ground implementation.

A report about the green development outlook of the Global South was also released at the conference. The report recommends that adaptation action be taken sooner rather than later, as early planning can deliver long-term, comprehensive returns at lower upfront cost.

Zhao Yingmin, president of the Belt and Road Initiative International Green Development Coalition, said that the coalition now has 64 members and more than 190 Chinese and foreign partners from nearly 50 countries — including the climate and environment authorities of 26 partner countries, and has established three major platforms covering investment and financing cooperation, expert network and big-data services.

The conference was co-hosted by China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Environment and Ecology Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and organized by the Belt and Road International Green Development Coalition, the Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and the Environmental Protection Department of the HKSAR.
