Australia – July 22nd, 2026: South African-born Australian author Paul Krige will soon release Zebras, a fact-based narrative named after the remarkable youth soccer team whose inspiring journey becomes one of the book’s defining threads. Inspired by Krige’s own experiences working in South Africa’s music industry during the height of apartheid, the novel weaves together football, music, and unlikely friendships to explore courage, compassion, and moral choice in a deeply divided society. While certain names and a small number of details have been adapted for storytelling, the events, people, and experiences at the heart of the book are rooted in real life.
At the center of the story is Kyle, a character based on the author himself, an ambitious young executive who discovers emerging black musicians while building a new music division. As his professional ambitions grow, so does his understanding of the inequalities surrounding him. Working alongside artists, producers, and trusted colleagues from different cultural backgrounds, Kyle begins to question long-held assumptions and confront the ethical challenges that accompany success within a deeply divided society.
Among the book’s most memorable relationships is Kyle’s friendship with Benny. A man based on the real Benny Nchabeleng, whose guidance introduced the author to township life at a time when interracial friendships carried enormous personal risk. Their bond became the foundation for experiences that included witnessing protests firsthand, surviving violent police crackdowns, finding refuge in black communities, and discovering a South Africa hidden from much of the country’s white population.
Music becomes a meeting place where creativity crosses social and political boundaries, allowing relationships to develop despite laws designed to keep communities apart. The story also reflects the author’s firsthand experiences promoting black artists, DJing at the popular Black nightclub Easy By Night, where he became known by the nickname “Concolo”, meaning concrete, and working alongside the colorful personalities who defined Sunshine Music during one of the industry’s most remarkable periods.
Beyond the recording studio, the novel celebrates another unforgettable group. The young soccer team known as Zebras. Their determination, teamwork, and unforgettable curtain-raiser match became a symbol of hope, demonstrating that children often see beyond the prejudices that adults accept. Paul Krige is a South African born, Australian and former music industry executive and entrepreneur. After fleeing apartheid-era South Africa, he rebuilt his life in Australia, eventually becoming managing director of Universal Music Australia and later founding the successful independent music company difrnt Music. His life has spanned political upheaval, exile, corporate success, personal reinvention and profound loss. Zebras is based on his extraordinary true experiences during one of the most turbulent periods in South African history.
